Class Descriptions:

Suzuki Cello Teaching Strategies by Dr. Alice Ann O’Neill  (Supplemental: 15 hours with 10 hours observations)  Suzuki Cello Teaching Strategies may be taken any time after completing ECC and Suzuki Cello Book 1. The course will cover deepening topics for Suzuki Cello teaching such as upgrading your praise, feedback, and communication with parents, lesson pacing, developing teaching segments, practical advice for teaching, and how to become a better Suzuki Cello teacher.

3 I’s: Introduce, Incorporate, Internalize by Linda Fiore (Enrichment: 15 hours with 10 hours observations)

Revisiting the Pre-twinkles by James Hutchins (Enrichment: 10 class hours with 5 hours observations at teacher discretion) Revisiting the Pre-Twinkles is designed for teachers who have registered a minimum of Violin/Viola Unit 1 and have at least one year of Suzuki teaching experience.

Theory for Cellists by Andrea Yun (Hybrid in-person & online, Enrichment: 10 class hours with 5 hours observations at teacher discretion) This course covers theory concepts and implementation during private lessons for students preparing for the Prelude to Bach’s first suite. Concepts covered will be written and aural theory, as well as theory-based intonation and musicality. This will be done in the context of the repertoire in Suzuki books 1-4. If there is time, we will cover beginning improvisation as well. Participants will be asked bring to class their favorite Book 4-level supplementary piece (a piece not in the Suzuki books) to share with the class. We will use these pieces as a starting point for discussions on how to analyze new pieces for theory elements.

Overview Suzuki Cello Books 5-8 with Supplemental Repertoire by Dr. Alice Ann O’Neill (Enrichment: 15 class hours with 8 hours observations at teacher discretion) Intended to widen teachers’ use of supplemental literature in their repertoire including Suzuki books 4 and above. The timing, purpose, practice points, techniques, and methods of expression important to each piece will be discussed, as well as how these relate to the standard Suzuki repertoire, in order to help teachers determine how and when to use them to strengthen their students’ core techniques.
