Every participant needs to be a member of the Suzuki Assocation of the Americas (SAA) and submit a videotape audition to the SAA receiving approval BEFORE the start of the course. Please click here to obtain application details. Plan ahead and allow enough time for your audition to be reviewed.

We recommend reading the SAA requirements for teacher workshop participants so you know what is expected.

PLEASE NOTE: infants, babies, and children of any age will not be allowed in teacher workshop classes. Please plan accordingly.

Double Unit Pricing:  for participants who plan on taking two book units (not including unit 1).

If you would like to make payment arrangements before April 1 (tuition divided into 3-4 payments), submit your registration without making payment and reach out to us with your phone number and email so we can contact you within a week. A spot is not guaranteed until arrangements are completed.

The Art of Bowing Part I with Dr. Carey Cheney (IN-PERSON & ONLINE)
  • Price: $485
  • Prerequisites: Cello “Basic” Teacher Training Audition, ECC! and Unit 1; it is recommended that participants
    have had reasonably advanced cello study.
  • Class Requirements: 10 hours of Lecture Classes, with some after-hours assignments, not to
    exceed 1.5 hours.

  • Description: Some traditional material from Sevcik, Popper, Schroeder, Feuilliard, Duport and reference to the Suzuki sequence of cello literature; study excerpts will be included prior to class start, with a curriculum of what will be covered each day in class. What will be discussed? The importance of consistency in bow hold; flexibility of bow hold; development of both on and off-the-string strokes to continue to acquire proficiency. These strokes will be emphasized: detache; martele; double-bowing; sautille; spiccato; down-bow and up-bow staccato; colle. Strategies for working on and teaching these strokes will be discussed, as well as helpful material/repertoire that can be used to this end. Presenter prefers live participation rather than via Zoom – this will give the opportunity of interaction and accurate feedback between the presenter and the participants. However, the option of remote participation is possible.

Tone of the Heart: Resonance Beyond the Strings with Koen Rens (IN-PERSON ONLY)

  • Description: The course covers lots of Suzuki tonalizations, ideas about connection, contact, and congruence. Active string playing and active listening. And hopefully a bit of hanging back on the chair and just enjoying being together. All instruments are welcome, but there will be a focus on strings.
