CELLO TEACHER TRAINING INFORMATION 2026

Classes have limited numbers of participants – your spot is not secured until you checkout and pay in full.

Please complete these steps for registration in order:

1. Sign up to be a member of the Suzuki Association of the Americas (SAA) if you aren’t already a member – click here.
2. Submit an audition and receive approval (if you haven’t in past years). Plan ahead and allow enough time for your audition to be reviewed. Click here for audition requirements.
3. Sign up on the SAA roster for your desired ISSI courses – search using your instrument and trainer – click here.
4. Register for ISSI on our website – click here.

We recommend reading the SAA requirements for teacher workshop participants so you know what is expected.

PLEASE NOTE: infants, babies, and children of any age will not be allowed in teacher workshop classes. Please plan accordingly.

Double Unit Pricing: for participants who plan on taking two book units (not including unit 1).

If you would like to make payment arrangements before April 1 (tuition divided into 3-4 payments), reach out to us with your phone number and e-mail before you submit your registration, and we will contact you within a week. Do not submit your registration until arrangements are made.

Cello Teaching Strategies with Carey Cheney (IN-PERSON & ONLINE)

Price: $465 ($100 less than last year)
Prerequisites: Cello “Basic” Audition for Units 1-4, ECC! and Unit 1.
Class Requirements: 10 hours of class time and no observations.
Starting in January 2025, Teaching Strategies will be a prerequisite for Unit 3. Teachers who have already taken Unit 3 will not be required to take Strategies, although we highly recommend it to all teachers.

Class Description from Dr. Cheney:

Teaching the Person In Front of You: A 10 hour Teaching Strategies course focused on the “How” of Teaching
A much-needed discussion concerns how the teacher can match their approach and expectations to the student in front of them, to help the student to become an accomplished learner.
In this 10 hour course, the main themes presented will be:

– Finding and awakening the Child’s Interests
– Ways to Help the child feel acknowledged and understood
– Suggestions for Helping the Parent Communicate positively with their Child
– Why it is important that student and parent have many opportunities to demonstrate their understanding during the lesson
– A discussion of motivation: extrinsic vs intrinsic motivators
– Developing the skill of pulling apart a skill to many steps, to accommodate the needs of all learners
– Strategies for the challenging moments of the teaching process.

In the chaotic and sometimes negative world in which we live, this work with our children may be one of the most important things in the World.
